Dan Vick of Pittsford claimed his second career Rochester NY USBC Masters title with a 279-191 victory over top seed Sam Capizzi in the championship match of the 34th annual event held at AMF Empire Lanes on Sunday, December 3. Vick, who entered the five-player stepladder as the #4 seed, defeated, in order, #5 seed Ryan Kretchmer, who won his title at AMF Empire in 2012; 4-time champion and #3 seed Mike Rose Jr. and then #2 seed and former Bud Light Challenge champion Jim Wollschleger to reach the title match.

Moments after his victory, Vick was presented the guaranteed $1,000 top prize by association president Mike Callan. In addition, the former Intercollegiate Men's Singles Champion for R.I.T. will be awarded a champion's ring and crystal pin at next year's Awards Brunch and won a paid entry into the 2018 New York State Masters. Vick won his first Masters crown at Domm's Bowling Center in 2010.
Capizzi, who was a City Tournament champion in 2016 and 2017, was looking for his first Masters title. He had placed 4th at the 2012 event at AMF Empire Lanes. In the position round he defeated Wollschleger, 229-193, to re-claim the top seed as both bowlers flip-flopped from 1st to 2nd many times throughout the day. The high game on Sunday was rolled by Brian O'Mara who posted a 299 (10-pin). Saturday's top effort during the 6-game qualifier was a 300 game by Rob Gustke. Rose Jr. was the qualifying leader among 70 bowlers with a 1393 total (232 average) on the 44-foot London pattern. Shanna Chepelsky became the second woman to make the cut to match-play as she placed 11th. Sarah Germano has twice made the match-play, including a runner-up finish at AMF Dewey in 2014.

Prior to Saturday's qualifier, Rose Jr. was presented his two Eagles for winning the 2017 USBC Open Championships Team and Team All-Events titles. Callan, along with association vice-president Barry Vee, assisted in the presentation. Rose Jr. now owns four Eagles.

Capizzi will earn $500 for 2nd, Wollschleger $435 for 3rd, Rose Jr. $380 for 4th and Kretchmer $320 for 5th. The other finalists and their finishes: O'Mara, 6th place, $300; 2-time champion Mark McClain, 7th place, $280; past champion Raymond LeChase II, 8th place, $260; Bill Hasiotis, 9th place, $240; Matt Wallace, 10th place (Matt's brother Jeff finished 3rd in 2016), $220; Chepelsky, 11th place, $200; and 3-time champion Norm Bialuski, 12th place, $180.
